BAJA COMPETITION IS BACK in 2013
May 18 – 19 Hannegan Speedway Competition

SAE BAJA 2013 is sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers and hosted by WWU’s Department of Engineering Technology/Vehicle Research Institute. On May 16 and 17 80+ teams of university students will bring their student-designed and built offroad ATV vehicles, project design, cost analysis, and sales presentations to the NW Washington Fairgrounds in Lynden for inspection and judging. Then on Saturday and Sunday, May 18 & 19, the vehicles will compete at the Hannegan Speedway in Bellingham. The vehicles must be designed for safe operation over rough terrain, including dirt, rocks, sand, mud, logs, steep inclines and shallow water.

We are expecting 80-100 teams to compete in the SAE BAJA 2013 including the student club team from WWU's Engineering Technology Dept. Among the teams signed up for this international event are teams from Canada, Mexico, India and France. Other participating teams are from universities across the United States. The list of competing teams and more information can be found on the official SAE website: http://students.sae.org/competitions/bajasae/washington/registration.htm

The Saturday and Sunday events at the Hannegan Speedway are free and open to the public so please join us as a volunteer or a spectator.

Phrasings in Word + Dance

Bellingham Repertory Dance presents its sixth annual collaboration with Chuckanut Sandstone Writers Theater this April, "Phrasings in Word + Dance."

In addition to dance, audiences will see Bellingham artists from a variety of backgrounds meld their crafts to create something new for the stage. From journalists to hip-hop artists, live music, improvisation and film – "Phrasings" features a spectrum of traditional and modern art forms.

All proceeds from ticket sales, as well as a silent auction held at each performance, will help the nonprofit dance company cover the expenses of its upcoming season.

The show will feature pieces choreographed by company dancers, as well as guest choreographer Annie Hewlett, who brings experience in Seattle's contact improvisation scene, and guest performer, Ian Bivins, a longtime New-York based physical theater artist.

Collaborating poets include writers Judy Kleinberg, Rick Hermann and Stephanie Hopkinson; former journalist Maria Mcleod, co-owner of How Loud Media company; and Casey Gainor, a spoken-word artist and member of the The Bad Tenants hip-hop band,

"Phrasings in Word + Dance" is at 7:30 p.m., April 27-28 and at 5 p.m. April 29 at Firehouse Performing Arts Center, 1314 Harris Ave. in Bellingham's Fairhaven neighborhood.

Please note that one of the pieces will include mature themes.
